Stop atCave Museum, Village Troglodytique de Rochemenier

Explore the village of Rochmenier which consists of 250 underground rooms, excavated out of the rock and distributed over around 40 farms. Rooms were added to meet the needs of a growing population. The oldest habitation apparently dates from the 13th century. The village gradually expanded right up to the 19th century. The dwellings are excavated from sandstone which contained sea shells. This rock is a kind of calcareous sand and was used by farmers to neutralise soil acidity. During your visit you will see part of the village consisting of two farms which were abandoned towards the beginning of the 20th century and opened to the public in 1967. The exhibits, furniture, tools and photographs describe the lifestyle of the last inhabitants.

Definitely recommend, especially when travelling with kids

samanthavC3266PZ, Dec 2024

The cave museum was very interesting for both adults and children and our kids (5&8yrs) loved it. We had never seen troglodyte caves before so it was a new experience.

Interesting afternoon

susiqponte, Dec 2024

Although we enjoyed our afternoon here, I found it a little too staged with items strategically placed! One impressive piece was the shadow puppet imagery in one of the caves. It was nice that we were given a leaflet which explained each cave and were allowed to wander around at our own pace.

A surprising place

IleneMcC, Dec 2024

This was not what I was expecting but was very interested in what I found. It was much more "civilised" than I expected as people led normal lives there right up until the mid 20th Century. It was very pleasant to walk around and see the farm machinery and learn about their lives in the cool of the caves. It was good value at 8 EURO.

Troglodyte village is super place to visit

S1315LYjacquelinem, Dec 2024

An extraordinary place with a fascinating history presented with great sensitivity and a sense of fun. It is a special history site and a great family location to visit. Helpful friendly staff and lots of information available on other attractions in the area. The little 14th century church across the road worth visit too. Also try a Troglodyte beer! It is very good. Highly recommend this experience. It has lots of authenticity.

Educational and interesting visit

Mike T, Dec 2024

Excellent and rather surprising place to visit, not too expensive and very informative - and it's much bigger than it looks too !!
