This fortified main gate, flanked by twin towers and a drawbridge, is your theatrical entry into the medieval world. It’s the most photographed spot in the city—and for good reason. Built in the 13th century, it’s both a defensive masterpiece and a visual icon.

One of the oldest sacred sites in the cité, this church mixes Romanesque strength with Gothic elegance. The sculpted doorway, flying buttresses, and stained-glass windows are stunning—even from the outside.
Pass byChateau et Remparts de la Cite de Carcassonne
Even without entering, the castle’s outer drawbridge and double defenses are awe-inspiring. This inner fortress is where Carcassonne’s counts once ruled and where attackers once stopped short.

Dating back to the 14th century, this stone bridge connects the medieval cité to the Bastide Saint-Louis (lower town). Its gentle curve frames views of the walled city perfectly—especially at sunset.

Great tour that is just a tad shorter than expected

Overall, Remi did a very good job, showing us the town and spend a lot of time explaining the history of the walls, fortress, etc.
We enjoyed the tour and would recommend it with the only caveat being that it was not two hours as advertised.
He pretty much finished after an hour and a half, and then said that he would add an extra short visit to the historic hotel. That stretched it to about an hour and 45 minutes, but still short of the promised time .

We had a 2 hour private tour with Remi who was very knowledgeable & friendly. Although the tour was supposed to end in the new town we agreed to stay in the old city & the time flew by. Would highly recommend this tour.

Gert was super friendly and knowledgeable! He made a point to show us the highlights of old Carcassonne, the bridge between the later addition & the town square. He added some special unexpected touches to the trip. The tour added to our appreciation of this lovely place.
