Strange experience. Was very excited about this dinner but had some of the worst service I’ve ever experienced. Food was delicious but took about 30 minutes to clear our dinners after both my partner and I had cleaned our plates and set our knives and forks. Served every table around us and ignored us. Same thing happened with the final cheese course and with the bill. Ended up paying cash instead of card because they never came back with the machine and we wanted to leave.

I don’t think this is a bad restaurant, but I did have the steamed cod that tasted putrid, like ammonia. The taste was so strong I got my friend to taste it and she agreed that it tasted sour. They were nice enough to offer a replacement (which I no longer had appetite for) and took the cost off the bill. The eggs in white wine sauce was nice though, and my friend’s duck breast was flavorful. I think it might be good to tread carefully if fish is your choice here.

As you cross the threshold of L’Ardoise, the quaint charm of the restaurant envelops you, setting the stage for a memorable dining adventure. The staff, with a blend of professionalism and warm hospitality, guides you to your seat, subtly promising an evening of attentive service.
The culinary tale begins with a plate of tender ravioli, each morsel bearing the echo of age-old culinary traditions. The allure of the next course, thinly sliced beef, epitomizes the chef’s deft hand and the rich bounty of the local terroirs. The melody of textures and flavors in each bite is a tribute to Beaune's pastoral simplicity yet sophisticated culinary ethos.
The journey continues through a series of delightful courses, each a testament to the region’s bountiful produce, creatively and thoughtfully crafted to enthrall the palate. The dishes are not merely food, but a canvas where the season's freshest offerings are painted in a myriad of flavors.
As the evening draws to a close, the grandeur of dessert takes the stage. 'Orange 4 Ways' isn’t just a sweet ending, it’s a crescendo of citrus celebration that dances between sweet, tangy, and zesty realms. It's an ode to the versatility of simple ingredients crafted with imagination and finesse.
No narrative of Beaune would be complete without a poetic mention of wine. The wine list at L'Ardoise is a curated odyssey through lush vineyards, both local and beyond, each glass a perfect companion to the unfolding culinary narrative.
L’Ardoise is more than a dining spot; it's a rendezvous with Beaune's rich culinary and vinicultural tapestry. 3.7S ****
Side note, the Royal Kir here was a bit lackluster, also service took for-e-ver despite the restaurant being not very full. The starter, while very pretty, didn't have a very interesting flavor profile. It wasn't bad, just a tad disappointing. The main was okay, nothing more. The first dessert was okay as well, it didn't pack the punch that I expected and felt a bit lacking. The second dessert on the other hand, thank goodness I ordered it, because it was truly special. Such rich and complex flavors, a real treat through and through. That dessert singlehandedly boosted my experience to a 4 star total, so good on ya'.

La Table du Square
After a top-to-toe makeover, this bistro on the main boulevard sports a lovely contemporary decor complete with wooden floors, black and white striped walls and photos of the stars of French cinema enjoying good food. Cooking has no secrets for chef Romain Escoffier (well, he does share the name of a legend of French cuisine!): he chooses local produce (such as succulent lamb reared at the Ferme de Clavisy) with which to craft his market-fresh cuisine. The à la carte menu and set menu (derived from the à la carte menu) are updated every fortnight. Given the location in Beaune, you won't be surprised to learn that the wine list boasts some 800 labels – so drink up!

Soul Kitchen
“Let me sleep all night in your soul kitchen” hauntingly sang Jim Morrison on the Doors’ first album and you can always ask Mathieu Guennal, the owner-chef who works alone in this dinky (12 seats only) downtown eatery in Beaune, if he’s willing to put you up! Mathieu works with local producers (chalked up on the blackboard) and cheerfully dishes up soul-warming, heartfelt nosh, as good as it is unfussy (such as slow-cooked pork belly, a ginger reduction and gratin of helianthus) in two gloriously priced €30 menus (one of which changes weekly). Take a seat and soak up the friendly, casual vibe of this small eatery with wooden floors and a raftered ceiling in the company of a generous chef.

L'Expression
This city-centre establishment serves top-drawer ingredients, many of which are to share (whole fish from the market, rib of Galice beef, butterflied, plump fattened Bresse Miéral chicken), in two trendily appointed dining rooms (open kitchen, glazed wine cellar and high tables). The food is cooked in a wood-fired oven. Extroverted, friendly atmosphere. Beautifully curated wine list.

Le Carmin
On Place Carnot, not far from the Hôtel-Dieu, this restaurant with a modern façade occupies the ground floor of a picturesque old house. After stints with Robuchon and Ducasse, chef Christophe Quéant crafts modern, seasonal cuisine based on traditional textbook foundations. His top-quality ingredients are transformed into spot-on, straightforward dishes, blessedly free of fancy frills. The contemporary-style dining room, which sports a beige colour scheme and exposed stonework, is the perfect foil for delicious dishes such as caramelised quail breasts and legs, white asparagus and baby carrots and the hot Grand Marnier soufflé – to die for!

Le Bénaton
In the heart of Burgundy, Beaune is known the world over for its annual charity wine auction held in the iconic Hospices edifice, famous for its glazed tile roof. A steadfast champion of fine French food and wine, Japanese chef Keishi Sugimura, couldn’t have found a town that suits him better. Trained in Japan, the chef excels in the art of the porkpie, which earned him the title of vice world champion in 2013. Flavoursome seasonal dishes sprinkled with creative touches.

Bistro de l'Hôtel
The elegant, chic bistro - style interior is the setting for cuisine that honours tradition and first - rate ingredients. The house speciality is roasted Bresse chicken. As for the wine list, it is quite simply impressive.

Le Relais de Saulx
This characterful establishment (1673) in the town centre, not far from the Hospices de Beaune, is in the capable hands of Charles Danet (previously at the helm of Le Timbre in Paris). He has had no trouble quickly making himself at home in Burgundy! His signature style is unmistakable in the wholesome market-fresh cuisine, which he describes as "artisanal seasonal" cooking.

La Superb
Located in the heart of the old town, this contemporary "dining bar" serves market-fresh dishes that are in tune with the seasons. Take a seat at the counter for views of the chef cooking fine mature meats or his tuna Rossini a la plancha, or alternatively in the small dining room with stone walls and glassed-in wine cellar, and prepare to enjoy tasty, no-frills cuisine.
