One Day Tour of the Somme Battlefield

Huw_D, Jul 2024

Rod is a fabulous tour guide. Apart from what you'd expect to learn about military tactics and conduct of the war, we learned great deal from him about the bigger picture, including how the Franco-Prussian war, northern European geology, and the imperial powers' competition to loot Africa all played their part. We packed a tremendous amount into 1 day - excellent value for money.

Particular highlights for me were Mametz Wood where the trees have reclaimed the battle-scarred land and the sunken lane near Hawthorn Ridge where Malins filmed.

Unforgettable

I was met at the railway station and offered a choice of either the Somme tour or Ieper as I had been on the Belgian tour I chose the Somme with Jackie and a lovely couple from Canada . We saw the CWGC at work near Arras (very interesting) before a great Somme tour the sights especially Thiepval were quite simply unforgettable the tour guide was brilliant after a really pleasant lunch which she provided we then made our way to Vimy Ridge which was probably the highlight of the day on our way back we saw a huge French cemetery and the final resting place of thousands of brave Germans. After dropping our Canadian friends back at the station Jackie was good enough to run me to the Arras memorial which I wanted to visit but don’t think I would have found on my own a really interesting experience bringing an end to a really unforgettable day any time you are in the area I would thoroughly recommend using this company I can personally say you will not be disappointed thanks once again you can rest assured I will never forget the day .

Hi Alan, thank you for your review - I am so glad you enjoyed your day despite the last minute itinerary change due to a problem with one of the vehicles. Lunch was my way of apologising- it is not normally included!

Did the Somme Offensive Tour organised by Ledger. The Trip, Drivers and Tour Guide were outstanding. The Guide incorporated my and the need of others outside of the itenery which is such a lovely thing to do showing that they cared. The Guide Gary was so knowledgeable and passionate. The Drivers Paul and Paul very proffesional funny and accommodation. Well done and Thank you.

Thank you for your review- however Ledger are a coach tour operator, we operate much smaller, more personal groups that entail us to personalise the tours to suit the individual. I am glad you enjoyed your day but you have posted this on the wrong listing.

Enjoyable journey through time

Alan_H, Jul 2024

I had a very enjoyable trip but through no fault of mine two fellow travellers from Canada really wanted to visit Vimy so the timetable was changed I had a trip to Vimy booked the day after so with the uncertainty with the weather cancelled as I didn’t see the point of repeating what I had seen .With such a late cancellation I received no refund but was wondering if you can see why I cancelled and maybe reconsider as the trip to Vimy wasn’t on the agenda of the advertised trip and obviously missed seeing some of the Somme .

Dear Alan- I have to admit I was a little confused by your review, as you appear to have left two reviews for the same tour. As you stated on your first review we had a change of itinerary which meant you got to see a lot more relevant content for the British, the visit you missed was to the Australian Memorial to the missing and the sir John Monash Centre- the next time you are over this way contact me direct and I will be happy to take you to see it. I was unaware that you had booked a tour with another operator the next day (you didn't mention it at the time) so I am unable to refund you as the tour was not booked with us- if you contact the other company via Viator they may be sympathetic. I went out of my way to ensure you got the best possible experience from your day including a visit to the Arras Memorial to see some soldiers that you had an interest in. Hope to see you again next time you are in France.

Amazing and sad

Dear Mat and Michele

thank you for your review-although the tour has a standard itinerary we will wherever possible tweak things to make sure everyone gets the most out of their time with us. The most importatnt thing for us is to pass on the torch of rememberance to the next generation.
