Between France and Spain

flyhermes, Aug 2024

Amazing history about the fights between France and Spain territories and how the border moved up and down thanks to this fortress. Very good guide, take the tour it’s free. He is explaining very well and with a sense of humour.

Fortress & prison: engineering and architecture

Gwenyth_M, Jun 2024

Parts of the fortress are opened only via keys and a with a French-speaking guide, and ARE worth seeing -- even for those whose French is not great! These portions are essential. Then, one can walk at leisure to see the rest. I recommend joining a French guide to also see the locked portions! The engineering at its time(s) was remarkable. The syncretic architecture is lovely to see -- and it speaks volumes about the region's history.

Enormous Spanish built fortress

MILOUW, Mar 2024

This is a very large Fortress built by the Spaniards, it fell to the French in 1642.

Its attraction lies with the scale of the place with a dungeon overlooking a vast inner courtyard.

The ochre color of the stones and the pinkish brickwork are pleasing to the eye.

Most of the interiors spaces are empty including the chapel.

Responses from ForteresseDeSalses

Hello, we thank you for your feedback. Here are some details: it is absolutely legitimate not to see any furniture in the fortress. In the 16th century, the furnishings were very rudimentary in a military fortress. Furniture was almost non-existent. See you soon

Interesting place with exceptional guide

CarlaCambrils, Mar 2020

We have done the guided catalan tour with Joan Lluis, he was very clear with the explanations, doing the visit interesting and funny, we would have stay longer, it is such a pleasure learning on this way! The structure is well conserved, and it is a big place. Count around 1-2 hours for visiting.

Pleasant visit

Really interesting visit to do. 9€ entry and free for -18 years. The tour is free for the whole bottom and guided for the top (not mandatory but included with tickets). The Guide explains the rooms very well. Too bad we can't visit everything but the main thing is there. Duration 45 minutes.
