Disappointing Experience
Dave_K, Dec 2024
Paris was gridlocked during Paralympics. I message our guide multiple times and called the number provided several times. I got no response to my request for help. We ended up missing our tour even though we allowed plenty of time to get there because of traffic snafu’s. I won’t book anything through Viator again. This the second time they ignore requests for help on this trip alone.
A must see

It was an amazing place, and our guide was very knowledgeable about the location. We did not go to Notre Dame as described in the tour, but that was ok
Great time on Paris tour!

The guide was very knowledgeable regarding sites in the tour giving much insight into historical events. This tour exceeded our expectations. I would recommend it.
Potential to be a good guide

We have enjoyed many tours through Viator over many years & generally give a 5 star rating as most are really excellent guides.
Emily certainly knew the history & religion that was needed for this tour. I’m sure with more experience she will be a good guide.
There were 5 in our tour - 3 French speaking Canadians & 2 university educated 70 year old Australians - my husband & myself.
Emily spoke very fast, did not have a very loud voice, & while she spoke very good English, she did have a strong French accent.
We both found it difficult to understand a lot of what she said. This was exacerbated by the fact that there was a huge amount of competing street noise from rubbish trucks, sirens, horns, motorcycles etc particularly in the first hour, much of which was in the street, owing to a misunderstanding about times. Emily took us to the Conciergerie for a 9.00am opening, but after waiting for the gate to open, with more historical explanations, we realised that it opened at 9.30am, so then we walked back past our first meeting place to hear about Notre Dame. For this part, we could have enjoyed the seating provided in front of the facade, but instead we stood to listen.
We then walked back to Sainte-Chapelle, & spent some time there. Although it wasn’t all that crowded or noisy inside, we both missed a lot of the information Emily imparted because she tended to address the 3 Canadians who found her easier to understand, more than she addressed us.
I’ve been a teacher all my life, & appreciated her idea of asking questions about information she had covered earlier. Normally we both do really well at such questions, as we are both genuinely very interested in history & culture, however we did very poorly in this situation because we missed so much of what she was saying.
We’ve had many tours with guides with strong accents, but they have always used an audio system, so we’ve had no problem understanding them. This might be a good option for Emily.
There were possibilities for some short seated breaks from walking, climbing stairs & standing in all 3 venues, while we listened, but we were never close enough to any seats to be able to use them. Emily looks super fit & healthy, but we have hip issues & back issues, so really appreciate a 10 minute opportunity to get the weight off our feet. This is something most guides in our experience understand & they provide little ‘seated respites’ for those who need them. Particularly when the tour runs longer than anticipated if there is a hiccup.
One more tip - it’s not always a good idea to allow your political opinions to colour a tour, there’s no knowing what views your listeners may hold.
I hope these tips will help Emily to enhance her skills a a guide.
